Why a Hermosa Beach search usually crosses the city line
Hermosa Beach is small. The city's general plan, PLAN Hermosa, puts it at about 1.4 square miles, with nearly two miles of shoreline. State licensing data from the California Department of Social Services shows, as of November 2026, one licensed residential care facility for the elderly (RCFE) in the city: a large community licensed for 142 residents. No small board and care home has a Hermosa Beach address.
So most searches include the cities next door. The same state data counts 7 licensed RCFEs in Redondo Beach and 90 in Torrance, where most are small homes. Our pages on Redondo Beach and Torrance describe what families find there.
One large community is a real option for some families, and Hamssa will tell you whether it may fit your parent's needs and budget. If it does not, or it has no opening, the short list moves a few minutes inland or south.

What Hermosa Beach neighborhoods mean for the move
PLAN Hermosa describes neighborhoods with very different streets. The Sand Section mixes small apartments and single-family homes on small blocks with alleys. Hermosa View sits high on a hill, with a steep rise north of Gould Avenue. The plan keeps the North End, Valley, Hermosa Hills, Eastside and Hermosa View mainly single-family. It also encourages senior housing in neighborhoods close to public transit, shops, and health and community facilities.
Housing like this matters when health changes. A parent in a hillside house or a tall beach home with stairs may manage for years and then, after a fall, not be able to get to the bedroom. When you compare homes, think about what your parent can do now and in a year.
- Board and care homes, licensed in California as RCFEs, are houses on residential streets, most licensed for six or fewer residents. In this area you will find them mostly in Torrance and the cities around it. Ask about steps at the front door and room for a walker in the bathroom.
- Larger assisted living and memory care communities offer more neighbors and activities. Ask how staffing changes at night, and how memory care residents are kept safe from wandering.
- If memory loss is part of the picture, say so early. Memory care placement is a different search from general assisted living.

Assisted living, memory care and board and care in Hermosa Beach
Families looking for care in Hermosa Beach usually mean one of three things. Here is what each looks like here and where Hamssa can help. Hamssa LLC is a placement agency, not a care home.
Assisted living
The state lists 1 licensed communities in Hermosa Beach with 50 or more beds, 142 beds in all. These larger communities, with apartments, a dining room and planned activities, are what most people mean by assisted living.
Memory care
California has no separate memory care license. Any licensed home caring for a resident diagnosed with dementia must follow the state's dementia care rules, and a home that advertises dementia care has to do more. The state's open data on homes in Hermosa Beach does not say how well a home does this. Some licence records note dementia care or a secured perimeter, but Hamssa still asks each home and refers families only to homes she has toured.

Hospital stays and how Hamssa works with your family
The three beach cities once had their own hospital. South Bay Hospital opened around 1960 and closed in 1998, according to Beach Cities Health District. Today the large hospitals closest to Hermosa Beach are in Torrance: Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance and Torrance Memorial Medical Center. If a case manager there says your mother cannot go home alone, start with hospital discharge placement. Hamssa does not place people in skilled nursing facilities, which are a different kind of care.
The work starts with a conversation about your parent's care needs, health, habits and monthly budget. Hamssa refers families only to licensed homes she has toured and interviewed, and she checks each home's state licensing record for citations and complaints. You can check a home yourself with our guide on how to check an RCFE license.
She schedules the tours and goes on every one with you, helps you talk terms with the home you choose, and checks in after the move. Her placement help is free for families, and this page explains how that works. The home's monthly cost is separate and varies by home, room and level of care.
Getting started from Hermosa Beach
Hamssa works alone, so you talk to the same person from the first call to the check-in after the move. She speaks English, Arabic and Spanish. She meets families at the homes they tour, not at an office.
To begin, call, text or email Hamssa. Tell her where your parent is today, what kind of help is needed, and how soon a decision has to be made.
What it costs you
Hamssa’s placement help is free for families.
Hamssa is paid a referral fee by the care home your parent moves into, never by the family. The amount differs from home to home. If the home that best fits your parent pays her nothing, she still recommends it. Ask her about it on the first call: you are entitled to know how any placement agency is paid. Common questions in Hermosa Beach
Are there assisted living or board and care homes in Hermosa Beach?
As of November 2026, California Department of Social Services licensing data shows one licensed RCFE in Hermosa Beach, a large community licensed for 142 residents, and no small board and care homes. Many Hermosa Beach families also look at homes in Redondo Beach and Torrance, where there are more choices. Hamssa can tell you which of them may fit your parent's needs and budget.
Is there a hospital in Hermosa Beach?
No. South Bay Hospital, which the three beach cities built, closed in 1998 according to Beach Cities Health District. The nearest large hospitals are in Torrance: Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance and Torrance Memorial Medical Center. A hospital stay there is often when a family first hears that a parent needs more care than home can give.
What does Beach Cities Health District offer older adults in Hermosa Beach?
Its Care Management program serves Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach residents who are 60 or older, and adults with disabilities. Care managers make confidential home visits, assess needs, suggest a care plan and connect people with meals, rides and in-home care. The district says the program is at no cost for eligible residents.
Can my father stay close to the beach?
Sometimes. It depends on whether a home near the coast has an opening that fits his care needs and budget when you are looking. Hamssa starts with the area you ask for and tells you plainly what is available. If the right fit is a few miles away, she will explain why, and the choice stays with your family.
How long does it take to find a home?
Some families tour two or three homes in a week and decide. Others take a month or more because relatives need to agree. A hospital discharge can shorten the timeline to days. Hamssa cannot promise a date, but calling early gives you more choices.
