How to use this guide
Each guide answers one question and can be read on its own. The key points are at the top, and the sources are listed at the bottom so you can check anything that matters to your family.
The rules described here are California's. Assisted living communities and board and care homes are both licensed by the state as residential care facilities for the elderly (RCFEs), and most of what a family needs to know comes from that one set of rules.
These guides are general information, not medical, legal or financial advice. Programs and rates change, so each guide gives the year its figures are from.
Common questions about this guide
Who wrote this guide?
The guides are published by Hamssa LLC, a senior living placement agency in Torrance, California, and reviewed by placement specialist Hamssa Benrekia, who holds an RCFE Administrator Certificate. Each one lists the state, federal and nonprofit sources it relies on.
Does this guide apply outside the South Bay?
Yes. The licensing rules, resident rights, contract rules and benefit programs described here apply across California. Hamssa's own placement help is local: she works with families looking in Torrance, the South Bay and the Harbor area of Los Angeles County.
Is Hamssa LLC a care home?
No. Hamssa LLC is a placement agency, sometimes called a referral agency. It does not own or run a care home. Hamssa helps families find and compare licensed homes, goes on tours with them, and her help is free for families.
Where should we start if we have very little time?
Start with the guide to urgent placement and the guide to hospital discharge, then call. When a move has to happen in days, a short conversation about care needs, budget and location usually saves more time than reading everything first.
No cost to families
Rather talk it through?
Tell Hamssa what is happening. She will explain the options for your situation and, if you are looking in the South Bay, help you find and tour licensed homes.
